Department of English Language and Literature

The Department of English Language and Literature at Bensa Daye Campus was established in 2011 E.C. At the time of its establishment, it was one of the six founding departments, excluding two departments that were added later. The campus where the department is located lies approximately 132 km east of the University’s Main Campus.

The mission of the department is to serve the community by providing quality education, with a strong focus on developing students’ core language competencies, including both macro and micro language skills, and to graduate highly qualified linguists.

With regard to research and community service, the academic staff of the department are committed to conducting problem-solving research and delivering community-oriented services, particularly targeting secondary school teachers and entrance examination candidates.

Since its establishment, the department has offered Bachelor’s degree programs in both regular and weekend modalities. However, beginning in 2017 E.C., the regular program was discontinued due to low student enrollment, while the weekend program continues.

Currently, the department has approximately 304 actively enrolled students. In addition, over the past three years, the department has graduated 77 students from the regular program and 127 students from the weekend program. According to a recent tracer study, approximately 99% of graduates have secured employment in various governmental and non-governmental organizations.

In terms of staffing, the department has nine academic staff members on active duty, all of whom are fully engaged in the teaching and learning process. One staff member is currently on study leave, conducting dissertation research. The department has three female academic staff members, one of whom is on study leave, while the remaining two are on active duty.

The department is strongly committed to supporting student success by providing quality instruction, supplementary worksheets, and core competency courses related to the exit examination, including the dissemination of exam blueprints through the department’s Telegram page.

Regarding research activities, over the past three to four years, staff members have actively participated in various research calls. Although only one individual has successfully secured research funding, the department continues to strive toward strengthening its research culture by identifying priority research areas and enhancing staff participation.
