Department of Biology
The Department of Biology is one of the pioneer programs established in 2011 E.C. at Hawassa University, Bensa Daye Campus. Since its inception, the Department has pursued academic excellence and scientific inquiry with the objective of providing high quality educational services while contributing to the physical and mental well being of its graduates.
Mission
The mission of the Department is to deliver quality education, produce highly qualified graduates, and supply competent professionals to potential employers and job creating sectors. The Department is equally committed to extending its professional contributions through scientific research and community engagement activities.
Academic Programs and Quality Assurance
The Department currently offers an undergraduate program in Biology through both regular and weekend modalities to meet community needs. The quality of education provided is reflected in students’ strong performance on the Exit Examination for two consecutive years, as well as the Department’s active participation in research calls and problem solving research initiatives.
Since 2013 E.C., the Department has successfully conducted four disciplinary research projects and has actively participated in various community engagement proposals. In addition, instructors provide professional support to Grade 12 students in nearby secondary schools, strengthening campus–community linkages.
Student Enrollment and Graduate Profile
The Department currently enrolls 380 students (15 regular and 365 weekend). In previous years, 72 regular and 169 weekend students have successfully graduated.
Graduates of the program have diverse employment opportunities in sectors such as the food and beverage industry, biodiversity and environmental protection agencies, and secondary school teaching.According to sequential tracer studies, 98% of graduates have secured employment in government and non governmental organizations, while the remaining graduates are engaged in private business ventures.
Staff Profile
The Department has 13 academic staff members, all serving at the Lecturer rank. Eleven are currently on duty, while two are on study leave pursuing further education. The Department values gender diversity, with two female staff members serving as Lecturers.
The Department places strong emphasis on student support and follow up. Staff members work collaboratively to guide students toward academic success and future professional achievement.
Research and Community Engagement
The Department is actively engaged in teaching, research, and community service. Over the past five years, four disciplinary research proposals have been selected for funding. In 2017 E.C., two research outputs were published in highly indexed journals, demonstrating the Department’s growing research capacity.
The Department has also prepared and submitted numerous community engagement proposals aimed at addressing local challenges, including initiatives related to solid waste treatment and disposal practices in Daye Municipality.
Department of Mathematics
The Mathematics Department is committed to delivering high quality education that equips students with strong analytical, logical, and problem solving skills. The Department plays a vital role in supporting the University’s academic mission through teaching, research, technology integration, and community engagement. Its undergraduate program is designed to prepare graduates who can contribute effectively in education, industry, research institutions, and other professional sectors.
Established in 2018 G.C., the Department was created to meet the national demand for well trained mathematics professionals. Since its inception, it has continued to grow both academically and institutionally, offering rigorous training and contributing to the advancement of mathematics education in Ethiopia.
Mission
The mission of the department is to produce competent and ethical mathematics graduates capable of solving real-world problems, Promote effective teaching and learning in mathematics and Conduct relevant research and support national development goals.
Academic Programs
The Department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Mathematics for both regular and weekend students. The curriculum includes foundational and advanced courses that prepare students for careers in teaching, applied sciences, data analysis, and postgraduate studies. The undergraduate program currently has no full-time students enrolled; however, it serves 63 weekend students who are actively pursuing a degree in mathematics.
The Department delivers high quality mathematics courses supported by qualified academic staff and effective instructional methods. Staff members engage in individual and collaborative research projects aligned with national priorities. Modern tools and software are integrated into teaching to enhance student understanding and engagement.
The Department also supports local schools, provides academic consultations, and participates in capacity building programs to strengthen community linkages.
Student Enrollment and Graduates
To date, the department has taught a total of 62 undergraduate students, comprising 31 regular students and 31 weekend students.
Graduates of the Mathematics Department enjoy a wide range of employment opportunities, including teaching in secondary and preparatory schools, data analysis and statistical work, banking and financial services, research institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and ICT and technology-related fields. The strong quantitative and analytical skills acquired through the program make mathematics graduates highly competitive in the job market.

The Mathematics Department is supported by a dedicated academic staff with the following profile: six academic staff members currently on duty, two staff members on study leave, and one female staff member ……... The department actively promotes staff development through ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
The department is committed to supporting student success by providing a range of academic and support services. These include continuous academic advising and mentorship, offering tutorial classes and remedial programs for challenging courses, encouragement of active learning and technology-assisted instruction, the creation of supportive learning environments, and the promotion of student participation in seminars, workshops, and mathematical activities.
Department of Physics
The Department of Physics at the Daye Campus of Hawassa University is a center of academic excellence and scientific inquiry. Established in 2011 E.C. alongside eight other founding departments, the department is located approximately 130 km east of the University’s Main Campus.
The department’s mission is to provide quality education and to graduate highly qualified professionals. It is committed to conducting scientific, problem-solving research and delivering meaningful community service. The department offers a Bachelor’s Degree program in Physics, available in both regular and weekend modalities to accommodate diverse student needs.
Currently, the department serves about 70 actively enrolled students and has graduated over 80 students during the past three years. A recent tracer study indicates that all graduates have successfully secured employment, demonstrating a job placement rate that compares very favorably with other academic programs.
The department’s strength lies in its dedicated academic staff of eight lecturers. While three staff members are currently on study leave, the five active faculty members are fully engaged in teaching and learning activities. The staff are recognized for their scientific expertise, creativity, and active involvement in research. The department is also working to enhance gender diversity and currently has one female academic staff member.
The Department of Physics places strong emphasis on student success and educational quality. This commitment was formally recognized in 2016 E.C., when the department was ranked first on campus for its contribution to quality education and overall departmental performance.
Looking ahead, the department plans to continue strengthening its core pillars of quality education and innovative, problem-solving research.
