Background

Bensa Daye campus is one of seven campuses of Hawassa University, located in the town of Daye in Sidama Region of Ethiopia, approximately 132 km east of Hawassa City. Officially established in 2019 G.C., it is the youngest campus within the University.


The Campus currently offers BSc and BA degrees across eight programs: Agriculture related (Agricultural Economics, Agribussiness and value chain management, and Plant Science), Technology/Engineering (Computer Science), Social Sciences/humanities (English Language and Literature), and Natural and Computational sciences (Biology, Mathematics and Physics).


Bensa Daye campus graduated its first cohort of 175 regular students on 18th September, 2021 G.C. The campus is committed to delivering quality education, advancing research, and strengthening community engagement while continuously working to improve student services and expand its impact within the local community.

Establishment history

 The foundation stone of Bensa Daye Campus was laid in January 2014 G.C, and the campus officially launched its first academic year in 2019 G.C with 340 regular students.

Academics

The campus offers both regular (1,172 students) and continuing education programs (1,925 students), with a total enrollment of 3,097 students in the 2011-2017 E.C fiscal years.

Aims

Daye Campus aims to expand its academic profile by introducing additional undergraduate programs in Geology and Mining, Business and Economics, Health Sciences, Technology, and Natural and Computational Sciences. These expansions are intended to align with national priorities and evolving market demands.

Campus land holding and opportunities for development

The campus occupies more than 100 hectares of land in Daye town. The surrounding Bensa Daye area is renowned for its specialty coffee production and potential geological resources. The campus leadership has expressed a strong commitment to leveraging these regional strengths through research, technology transfer, and community-focused initiatives—particularly in agriculture and rural development.

Bensa Daye Campus is dedicated to delivering quality education, conducting problem-solving research, and providing technology transfer and community services. The long-term vision includes launching graduate-level programs (Master’s and beyond) in fields such as Agriculture, Natural and Computational Sciences - especially in geology and mining -, and Social Sciences.
